Happy Father’s Day!

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day to all my clients and readers who are fathers! While Father's Day as a U.S. holiday was only inaugurated in the early 1900s as a complement to Mother's Day, it seems only fair to have a holiday for each parent to celebrate all their efforts in raising the next generation. And since this is a travel site, I'd like to take a moment to thank my husband for all the ways he helps out when we travel (or when I travel alone for work). I'm sure many other mothers are thankful to their husbands for similar and additional reasons.

Thank You for….

1. Taking Care of Our Son When I Have a Work Trip

I try to keep my work travel to a minimum, but there is usually one major industry event and sometimes a second site inspection trip I do each year where I'm traveling alone. My husband works full time of course, but he also takes care of our son while I'm gone, getting breakfast ready, packing a lunch, dropping him off at school, picking him up, making dinner, and putting him to bed. It's not easy being a solo parent while working, and I'm incredibly grateful to him for all his support.

2. Take Care of Our Son Much of the Time We Travel Together on Family Vacations

Most of our family “vacations” are in reality also site inspection trips for me, so I'm busy meeting with hotel and resort managers, viewing different room and suite types, taking photos and notes, and also fielding client requests. Since we don't travel with a nanny and don't expect our son to be all day in a kids' club, even if there is one, that means a *lot* of father and son time. While I certainly carve out some family time, it's not exactly always relaxing for my husband, since even 8 year olds can have quite a lot of physical energy.

3. Acceptance of the Many Credit Cards

Not every spouse is so keen on having 10 or more credit cards all open at the same time, or regularly applying for new credit cards. Thankfully my husband considers it a worthwhile hassle as it enables us to fly business class or first class and to travel to distant destinations we wouldn't otherwise, while also arriving more rested than we would otherwise.

4. Driving at the Destination

While I have driven long distances, including cross country when moving myself for grad school, I've never really enjoyed driving and am happy to live in the one U.S. city where it's actually a disadvantage to own a car. That certainly has advantages, such as making all credit card rental insurance primary (since we don't have car insurance) but it also reinforces my desire not to drive even in places where driving is pretty necessary, such as Tuscany and New Zealand. Thankfully my husband doesn't mind driving at all, so he's always the driver whenever we rent a car, unless for some reason I arrive before he does and I have to rent the car.

5. Reviewing Airlines, Airline Lounges and Hotels From a Tall Man's Perspective

While I of course write most of the reviews on TravelSort and feel that provides a sense of consistency in the reviews since I apply the same set of metrics to everything, I'm well aware that there are things I view differently than others. That's why I'm grateful that my husband has also lent his perspective by reviewing the airlines he's flown on from a tall man's perspective (since he is 6'5″), and also as an avid IFE user. There are of course many non-travel related things I'm grateful to my husband for, but if you'll excuse me, I need to make a Father's Day dinner and also brace myself for my Father's Day gift to my husband: watching any film of his choice, including ones in the suspense, horror and action genres. I'm just hoping he doesn't choose “The Witch” or to rewatch “The Conjuring”….

How are you celebrating Father's Day?
