Park Hyatt Maldives Back of House Tour

Although the Park Hyatt Maldives Back of House Tour isn't listed on the activity list, I learned about it from other reviews, and was keen to take the munchkin on it since he often enjoys constructing power stations, recycling and waste processing facilities with his magna tiles and legos. Imagine the excitement of seeing real life ones in action, powering and serving a resort!

We were introduced to Abdulla Rasheed, the Engineering Manager, whose teams manage all aspects of the back of house operations. Here are the highlights:

1. Water Desalination

It's pretty incredible, but the Park Hyatt Maldives desalinates all its own water for drinking, bathing, cooking, etc. Abdulla mentioned that the hotel invested in a more expensive system that has lower maintenance costs on an on-going basis. Seeing all the equipment involved and hearing the additional UV purification that the drinking water undergoes made me not mind paying a few dollars for the water at the restaurants! There is no charge for water you consume in your villa, and they learned our preference quickly for still water, since none of us drink sparkling water.

2. Water Bottling

The very first room we saw was the super clean bottling room. There's an autoclave to sterilize the bottles, and Abdulla mentioned that soon they'll start applying seals to all newly bottled water. There is rigorous testing several times a year from various resort sources to ensure the water quality is up to scratch.

3. Power Generation

The Park Hyatt Maldives, since it's on its own island of Hadahaa, has to produce all its own power. From the design stage, it was planned to make operations as sustainable and efficient as possible, so the generators, whose power goes in large part to run air-conditioning in the villas, generate heat that is used to heat the hot water supplied to the entire island. It saves energy and avoids the emission of 4.3 tons of CO2 per year.

4. Sewage Treatment And Water Reuse

As you'd expect, there's sewage treatment on the property, and water from sinks, showers and baths is reused. As Abdulla explained, newly desalinated, cleaned water is supplied to sinks, showers and baths. This water is almost as pure as the bottled drinking water, although it hasn't undergone UV water purification. Then, wastewater from the sinks, showers and baths is combined with water recovered from toilets that has undergone sewage treatment, and reused for toilets.

5. Food Grinding and The Incinerator

Food scraps are ground and either composted or provided as “fish food,” while the incinerator is used to reduce the volume of other waste.

6. Carpentry

There's a dedicated carpenter who keeps the woodwork in good repair and builds new furniture as needed. It makes sense, since in this tropical climate, the wood has to be meticulously cared for and periodically replaced.

7. Laundry and Ironing

The munchkin was in awe of these industrial sized washing machines, used for the hotel's linens and towels, not to mention staff uniforms. Guest laundry is washed in smaller machines, each villa's in its own machine.

8. Food Storage

Greeting us when we entered the food storage space were containers of the largest papayas I'd ever seen–much larger than the ones we typically grow in Hawaii. But the bananas, as I mentioned in the Park Hyatt Maldives Food and Dining post, were the apple banana variety, which I find tastier than regular bananas.

9. Executive Offices, Including the General Manager's Office

We got to peek in and see the office of the hotel's new General Manager, Julian Moore. Interview with him coming soon!

10. Staff Kitchen and Canteen

There's a canteen for staff meals, and we saw a variety of curries, roshi flat bread (the same as what is served with the tuna mushuni at breakfast).

While many staff likely get a considerable workout just carrying out their duties, there is a staff fitness center:

The munchkin especially loved the staff game room–he would have stayed there to play some ping pong or pool if we'd let him 🙂

There was also a mosque, but I didn't feel comfortable taking a photo of it at the time. You'll just have to see it for yourself when you visit.
