United Airlines' Relax Row is bringing a bed to Economy Class, starting in 2027. The new product, similar to Air New Zealand's Economy Skycouch, turns a row of three economy seats into a couch/bed via adjustable leg rests that fold up at a 90-degree angle. United will provide a mattress pad, plush blanket, two additional pillows, and even a plush toy and Children's Travel Kit for families.
While Air New Zealand was the first to introduce the Skycouch concept, United Airlines is the first North American carrier to offer it, and holds North American exclusivity on the design, which could be a competitive boost vis-a-vis Delta, American Airlines, and Alaska Airlines for the long haul routes it's offered on.
The Relax Row will ultimately be offered on more than 200 Boeing 787 and 777 widebody aircraft, with the roll-out occurring 2027-2030. The seats will be located between United Economy and United Economy Plus, with up to 12 United Relax Row sections on each plane.
The United Airlines Relax Row could be especially helpful to families on long flights, since it's rare to be able to book four business class award seats on the same flight, especially at a reasonable cost in miles.
