This Park Hyatt New York Hotel Review, 2018 is from our recent stay at this midtown hotel on 57th Street, which opened in 2014. It's Park Hyatt's flagship hotel, and is entirely new build, making it one of the handful of newer NYC luxury hotels, together with The Baccarat and Four Seasons New York Downtown. Park Hyatt New York Location and Check-In

The Park Hyatt New York is located at 153 West 57th Street, close to 7th Avenue, close to the 57th Street and 7th Avenue subway stop (N, Q, R trains) and the 57th and 6th Avenue subway stop (F train) and a short walk from Central Park, MoMA, the theater district, and midtown shopping and dining.

The Park Hyatt occupies floors 1-25 of One57, a luxury condo building, so the condos on the highest floors naturally have the best Central Park views, while the hotel's rooms and suites generally don't have any park views, or in some cases very partial, obstructed views of the park.

Due to client work we checked in later than originally planned on a Friday, but fortunately there was no wait, and the friendly associate swiftly checked us in and provided our bag, that we'd brought by earlier.

Park Hyatt New York City View Room

We were in a King City View Room on the 19th Floor, on the 57th Street side. Here's a floor map of the 19th floor. Our room and the King room right next to it, also facing 57th Street, can have a door that closes them off from the hallway, creating a foyer. This is the best bet for families with two children, who will need two rooms, unless the family is willing to book a suite and attach a room with two double beds to it. That's because the Park Hyatt New York doesn't have any rooms that interconnect with each other; only a suite that interconnects with a room, or the option of two adjacent rooms with the outer door creating a shared vestibule space, as mentioned.

In our case, Housekeeping provided an extra bed for our 10 year old son, and this was placed by the foot of our bed, although we were still able to walk around our bed without issue. For our King bed, I'd requested Housekeeping to make it up with a plush mattress pad, and this made it much more comfortable than any other Park Hyatt bed we've slept on. We actually slept over 8 hours, and awoke very refreshed.

It is important to note that light sleepers may want to request a room on the other side of the building, not 57th Street, as we heard sirens and quite a bit of traffic until 10pm, which is about when we fell asleep, and there was increasing traffic noise after about 6am.

We were welcomed by a lovely card, along with a generous assortment of fresh fruit, Voss bottled water, and Neuhaus chocolates (which I really enjoy, having tried them for the first time as a parting gift on our Brussels Business Class A330 flight). The modern bathroom was a highlight, with its double sinks, mirror with embedded TV (we caught a bit of the Olympics, the women's biathlon), walk-in rain shower, and soaking tub. The heated bathroom floor was particularly welcome, given our winter stay.

It was also great to see additional amenities, such as a dental kit, mouthwash, brush, nail care etc. in a box underneath the sinks. It was strange, however, not to see a razor there, which would normally be included in similar setups.

There's a bedside control panel from which you can easily control the lights and shades, both the solar shades (sheers) and the blackout drapes.

It would have been nice to have power outlets right by the bed, but there was a row of them by the desk, near the tablet clock that also served as the hotel directory of services. You can easily see all the room service options there, as well as spa treatments, and reserve right from the tablet.

I didn't manage to find shoe polishing on the tablet and assumed it wasn't a service the hotel provided, but later, as we were checking out, I did actually find a form buried in one of the drawers below the closet. Sure, I could have called to find out the answer, but it would be nice to have everything listed on the tablet so as not to have to search through all the drawers.

Park Hyatt New York Fitness Center and Swimming Pool

Even if your room doesn't provide any view of Central Park, you can get peek-a-boo views by taking the elevator up to the 25th floor and going up the stairs to the fitness center, where you can glimpse the park from part of the gym and also from the women's locker room.

We get a fair amount of exercise just living in NYC without a car, so more of interest to us was the swimming pool. There are soaring ceilings and a wall of windows that let in great natural light for the 2-lane lap pool.

Be aware that the Park Hyatt is popular with families, so there's a good chance that there may be young kids in at least one of the lanes, unless you're at the pool in the very early morning or late evening. This was fine by us, as we have a 10-year old ourselves and were there to relax, not to do any serious swimming.

The jacuzzi was a great temperature, very warm, but not so hot that you couldn't stay in it for more than a few minutes.

Park Hyatt New York Breakfast at The Living Room

The Park Hyatt New York now has just one restaurant, The Living Room, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, although most guests will want to head out and explore NYC's food scene.

I got the 57th Street Breakfast, which includes juice, egg dish of your choice, bacon or sausages, toast or pastry, and a hot drink. The omelet was very good, and made with exactly the additions I requested. My son and husband liked the bacon, but would have preferred it crispier.

Instead of one regular size pain au chocolat there were two mini ones, that were flaky and fresh.

The cappuccino was fine, although there was no foam art.

My husband enjoyed his pancakes, and I thought the Meyer lemon yogurt and blackberry pomegranate topping was one of the more creative ones I've seen.

Our son loved his brioche french toast, as well as his yogurt with berries and granola:

The Verdict

The Park Hyatt New York has a convenient midtown location and some of the most modern luxury hotel rooms in the city, together with a great pool area, thanks to soaring ceilings and excellent natural light. We appreciated the lovely welcome amenities, including fresh fruit and Neuhaus chocolates, and that Housekeeping was able to provide a plush mattress topper that helped us sleep better than we have at any other Park Hyatt, where generally we've found the mattress too firm.

Given our winter stay, we also really liked the heated bathroom floors. The bathroom was excellent for an entry level room, with double sinks, TV embedded in the mirror, large walk-in rain shower, soaking tub, and Le Labo bath products.

Service during our brief stay was somewhat mixed. Check-in was excellent, as was the aforementioned housekeeping in terms of providing the requested mattress pad. There seemed to be very minimal pool service, however–there was a shortage of clean towels, and used ones lay on the loungers without being replaced. No one was at The Living Room to greet us on arrival, so we sat ourselves, and after awhile an associate handed us menu, but didn't smile and didn't make us feel welcome in any way. Our server was fine. Later, when our room key didn't work, I went down to reception and an unsmiling associate demanded my name and number and rekeyed me, without a smile and without any of the expected “sorry that your key wasn't working, let me help you with that” or similar. Overall, it's a strong hard product, but service could use some work in certain areas.
