The REAL ID Act means you may need your passport to show the TSA for domestic air travel as of January 22, 2018, if your state driver's license isn't compliant and an extension hasn't been granted. Here's a map depicting the states that already have compliant driver's licenses (green), those that have been granted an extension (yellow) and those that are under review (blue).
Specifically, as of time of writing, travelers with driver's licenses from New York, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan and Missouri will need to show a passport or other REAL ID-compliant identification starting January 22, 2018, unless a further extension is granted.
Travelers with driver's licenses from Alaska, California, Idaho, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, and Washington have an extension until October 10, 2018, when they will need to use passports or other REAL ID-compliant identification for domestic air travel.
