American Airlines First Class to Hawaii: 28K-30K AA Miles

Fly American Airlines First Class to Hawaii for 30K AAdvantage Miles each way on select dates. Normally, American Airlines domestic first class awards start at 55,000-80,000 AAdvantage miles each way, and they can be well over 100,000 miles on some dates.

Keep in mind that these flights will be in recliner seats; you'll be hard pressed to find any award flight in a flat bed seat for less than 89,000 miles each way. Still, given that it's easy to spend 30,000 miles or more just for economy class awards for certain dates and times, this could be a good deal for some.

Note that these deals need to be accessed from the AA.com home page, and generally won't be visible if using the advanced search option. Instead, to narrow down the possible dates, go into the calendar search function and restrict the search to first class.

Where to Stay in Hawaii

If you have 1 week or more, you could visit a couple islands. My favorite island is the Big Island of Hawaii, with its many dramatic landscapes, from the Kilauea Volcano area to Mauna Kea, which sees snow in the winter most years (Mauna Kea means “white mountain” in Hawaiian), and from waterfalls to black sand beaches. Currently, the top place to stay is the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, although Mauna Lani, acquired by Auberge Resorts and remodeled, will be competition. There's also the Fairmont Orchid, although it doesn't compete with Hualalai's amenities and service. TravelSort Clients may reserve the above resorts with Four Seasons Preferred Partner or Virtuoso benefits.

Currently the top resort in Hawaii is the Four Seasons Lanai, thanks to the extensive investment by owner Larry Ellison of Oracle.

On Maui, my clients' favorites are the Four Seasons Maui at Wailea and, for families and inter-generational travel, the Montage Kapalua Bay.

On Oahu, I recommend the Four Seasons Resort at Ko Olina for a resort-type stay, or the Ritz-Carlton Waikiki if wanting to be in Waikiki or near downtown. A future development is the Mandarin Oriental Honolulu, which is to open in 2021.
