Why Not Use More AMEX Membership Rewards Points as Payment?
Using AMEX Membership Rewards points to pay is a terrible value proposition, as you only get 0.7 cents in value per Membership Rewards point. As a rule of thumb, you want to be getting at least 2 cents per AMEX Membership Rewards point redeemed, and ideally much more. Generally we don't redeem our miles and points unless we're getting at least 4-5 cents per mile or point, and ideally more.
Can You Use Amazon Gift Cards to Pay for Your Purchase?
Yes; we earn 5X points per dollar on all Amazon spend by purchasing Amazon gift cards with our Ink Cash card at Staples, which we then load to Amazon. Anything we buy at Amazon draws on our gift card balance, and it was the same with this promotion. Because we also have the Chase Sapphire Reserve, we're able to transfer out all these points we earn at 5X to Ultimate Rewards partners, such as Korean Air Skypass, Singapore KrisFlyer, United MileagePlus, British Airways Executive Club, etc.
Can You Buy Amazon Gift Cards or Other Gift Cards With This Promotion?
Yes, although the terms state otherwise. We bought some Whole Foods gift cards at 20% off, since we'll easily use these over the next few weeks, and readers have bought up to $400 in Amazon gift cards when also putting $100 of other stores' gift cards or other Amazon merchandise in their cart at the same time.
