Brown’s Beach House, Fairmont Orchid Review

Brown's Beach House, Fairmont Orchid Review

.

This Brown's Beach House Review is from our recent 2021 stay at the Fairmont Orchid resort on the Big Island of Hawaii. Brown's Beach House is the resort's signature restaurant, with outdoor seating on the lawn near the beach, accompanied by live but unobtrusive Hawaiian music. Brown's Beach House Location and Hours

Brown's Beach House is located at the Fairmont Orchid resort, at 1 Kaniku Drive on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, about a 28 min. drive from Kona Airport (KOA). It's open only for dinner nightly, from 5:30-8:30pm.

Brown's Beach House Menu and Food

The menu isn't extensive, which made deciding easier.

The complimentary bread basket was the favorite of our trip, especially the pineapple sourdough, and came with both butter and herb infused olive oil:

Alongside, we enjoyed a nice glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc:

We shared a couple of appetizers, a refreshing Strawberries and Goat Cheese Salad with charred broccolini and mustard emulsion, and the Ahi Poke, with avocado puree and taro chips. Both were excellent, although we wished for more ahi poke to go with the abundance of taro chips.

We shared two entrees among the three of us. The Kona Kampachi was my favorite preparation of kampachi during the trip, with its inspired pairing with coconut rice, Dungeness Crab, along with grapefruit and heart of palm: sweet and tart, creamy and crunchy. I do think this should have been a more generous portion as a main course however, so don't order this if you're feeling ravenous.

For those with a heartier appetite and/or preferring meat, we can enthusiastically recommend the Five Spice Duck, served with a Molokai sweet potato hash, duck confit, rainbow chard, and a pineapple rum sauce. It's the best duck dish I've sampled in Hawaii in recent years.

The dessert menu is similarly short; we chose to take with us the Kona Coffee Mud Pie, as it was getting a bit chilly and we needed to get our son to bed. It was tasty, although not as good as the savory courses we'd enjoyed.

A nice touch were these coconut macaroons, as mignardises. Again, nothing exceptional, as sweets don't seem to be a forte, but a sweet note to close on.

The Verdict

We greatly enjoyed our dinner at Brown's Beach House; in fact, it was the highlight of our otherwise unexceptional stay at the Fairmont Orchid. The relaxed outdoor ambience, with well-spaced tables, superb service, and stand-out dishes such as the Kona Kampachi (although a small portion) and Five Spice Duck, along with the beautiful sunset, made for a memorable evening.
