There's great Lufthansa New First Class award availability right now to Munich from Montreal, and decent award availability on the Vancouver to Munich route. Too bad this didn't occur prior to the United Award Chart Devaluation, of course, since first class partner awards are now 110,000 United miles each way, a 63% increase from the pre-devaluation amount of 67,500.
Still, if you have hundreds of thousands of United miles, it could be worth it to be able to book Lufthansa first class awards in advance. Recall that normally a Lufthansa first class award is only available up to 15 days in advance, and often for just one person.
Both Lufthansa flights are on the A330-300, featuring Lufthansa's new first class. And even if you're connecting to another flight in Munich that is on business or economy class, you should be granted access to Lufthansa's First Class Lounge in Munich, which while a good deal smaller than the Frankfurt First Class Terminal, is excellent.
Note that while the Montreal to Munich flight operates year round, the Vancouver to Munich route is seasonal, and operates March 30 – October 24 in 2014. I also found much better availability for two on the Montreal to Munich flight for the dates I checked:
Vancouver to Munich was harder for two, so plan on being flexible with your dates, especially on the Munich to Vancouver return, if that's the route you want:
No United miles or can't bring yourself to redeem 110,000 United miles each way? You can book with Aeroplan, for 62,500 miles each way, but ~$400 in fuel surcharges, or with Aviana Lifemiles for 72,500 miles each way without fuel surcharges (but keep in mind you can't book mixed cabin awards with Lifemiles, so you'll need to terminate in Munich unless connecting to another first class flight).
Do you plan to book Lufthansa first class to Munich? Move quickly, as award availability will likely not last that long.
