40X AAdvantage Miles per Dollar on Magazines via AAdvantage eShopping

40X AAdvantage Miles per Dollar on Magazines via AAdvantage eShopping

You can earn 40 AAdvantage miles per dollar at Magazines.com, using the American AAdvantage eShopping Portal. While there have been better deals in the past, of 60X and 50X, 40X isn't bad if you just need to top off your AAdvantage account with a few thousand miles for an award redemption.

The Offer

  • Earn 40 AAdvantage miles per dollar when clicking through the AAdvantage eShopping portal to Magazines.com
  • Not eligible on automatically renewed subscriptions.
  • Not eligible on purchases made with coupon or discount codes that are not found on this site.
  • Orders cancelled within 90 days are not eligible.
  • Not eligible on gift card, certificates or any other similar cash equivalents.

Analysis

This is essentially buying AAdvantage miles at 2.5 cents each not taking into account the magazines you receive. That's expensive in terms of buying a lot of miles, since with the best AAdvantage buy miles offers you can buy miles at 2 cents or less per mile, but you have to buy a lot of miles to get that rate.

For example, the current AAdvantage Buy Miles offer gives you a maximum bonus of 42,500 AAdvantage miles, if you buy at least 100,000 miles for $3201.25, including Federal excise tax and the $30 processing charge. That's equivalent to buying miles at 2.2 cents each.

To get a price under 2.5 cents per mile, you'd have to buy 20,000 miles with a 7000 miles bonus, for the cost of $664.25. If you bought 19,000 miles you wouldn't earn any miles bonus, and you'd be paying over 3.3 cents per mile.

So, while I wouldn't be going crazy with this offer, it could be worth taking advantage of if you see some magazines you're interested in subscribing to anyway, say $100 worth of magazines, as you'd earn 4000 AAdvantage miles plus the value of the magazines. Just don't forget to remove the auto-subscribe function since you won't earn additional miles once the subscriptions come up for renewal.

Best Uses of AAdvantage Miles

AAdvantage miles aren't as easy to earn as some other miles, given that of the major transferable points currencies, only Starwood Preferred Guest Starpoints transfer to AAdvantage miles; AMEX Membership Rewards points, Chase Ultimate Rewards points and Citi ThankYou points do not. And even after the 2016 AAdvantage Award Chart Devaluation, AAdvantage miles are a great way to get to Japan in JAL First Class or JAL Sky Suite Business Class, and to fly some great first class awards such as Etihad First Apartment on the A380, Cathay Pacific First Class and Qantas A380 First Class.

Do you plan to top off your AAdvantage account with this 40X offer from Magazines.com?
